Phineas Gage

Picture
Title: Phineas Gage

Author: John Fleichman

Genre: Non Fiction

In Vermont 150 years ago, Phineas Gage had a horrible accident while working the railroads.  Phineas was a foreman, and was in an accident involving explosives and a tamping iron. Despite having a hole in his head, Phineas had a miraculous recovery. Phineas’s case led to brain discovery’s, which helped scientists learn a lot more about the brain.

The theme of this book is luck. The author of this book said that Phineas was lucky. I disagree because he was almost killed by an iron rod. He was unlucky; however he lived another eleven years! I think he was fortunate because it went right through his brain, and he lived! I think he was unlucky because my definition of lucky is having something very rare and good happen to you, and that certainly didn’t happen to Phineas.

I liked and disliked this book. I liked that the pictures, and I especially liked the one that had the three dimensional head with the rod through it! Also, I liked the brain scan pictures! Although I thought that some parts were confusing, and I disliked them. I disliked all the medical terms that they used in this book, and how it was so detailed. I rate this book as three and a half. I would recommend this book to doctors, nurses, and non fiction readers and writers.
